Dependency Parsing

Dependency parsing is a natural language processing technique that analyzes the grammatical structure of a sentence by identifying the relationships between its words, specifically which words depend on which others, such as a verb and its subject, or a noun and the adjective modifying it. The result is typically visualized as a tree, with each word connected to the word it grammatically depends on.

This structural understanding matters for tasks that need to correctly interpret meaning rather than just recognize individual words in isolation: knowing that "bank" is the object of "visited" rather than the subject of the sentence, for instance, changes how a system should interpret the sentence overall. Dependency parsing underpins more advanced natural language understanding tasks like question answering and information extraction, where correctly identifying who did what to whom in a sentence is essential to interpreting it accurately.
