Copilot Studio: From Zero to Published Agent

A Copilot Studio agent can be answering questions within an afternoon. You give it a name, connect a document, and try a question in the test pane. The useful work begins when that tidy demo meets a real channel. A colleague may get a different answer in Teams, or the agent may say it "submitted your request" when no record was ever created.

This module follows one agent from an empty draft to publication, with most of the attention on those gaps. You'll keep its answers tied to an approved source, build conversations that collect only the values they need, and connect tools and flows that wait for system confirmation before reporting success. You'll also test each published destination on its own. Throughout the module, keep the evidence states separate. Saving, testing, publishing, and observing the agent in a real host each prove something different. Fluent wording proves none of them.

The lessons focus on design and diagnosis, because Copilot Studio's controls change between releases. We name controls by their job instead of asking you to memorize a menu. If you have a licensed environment, you can build along. If you don't, the paper exercises let you practise the same decisions.

What you'll walk away with

  • Build and ground a first Copilot Studio agent, then verify it claim by claim
  • Choose deliberately between the classic and new agent experiences
  • Design reliable knowledge grounding and deterministic topic conversations
  • Add prompts, flows, and Adaptive Cards without reporting unconfirmed work
  • Take an agent autonomous with human approval, evaluation, and safe publishing
  • Estimate maker licensing and Copilot Credit consumption for a real audience
  1. 01Your First Copilot Studio AgentBuild a grounded agent from one source, recognize the classic and new authoring experiences, and keep saved, tested, published, and deployed evidence separate.13 min
  2. 02Knowledge Grounding and Conversation DesignPut maintained facts in an authoritative source and predictable exchanges in topics. Then test each boundary without asking one component to do the other's job.14 min
  3. 03Tools, Flows, and Adaptive CardsChoose the right tool for calculations, transformations, external actions, and structured output. Report success only when the responsible system confirms it.14 min
  4. 04Autonomous Agents, Testing, and PublishingAdd human approval and replay protection before an agent acts on its own. Evaluate it with checkable rubrics, then verify publishing, host behavior, and identity separately.16 min
