Feature extraction is the process of identifying and isolating the most relevant, informative characteristics from raw data, reducing it to a more compact and manageable representation that's easier for a machine learning model to process and learn from. Raw data, whether it's an image, an audio clip, or a block of text, often contains far more information than a model actually needs, much of it redundant or irrelevant to the task at hand.
For text specifically, feature extraction might involve identifying key words, phrases, or grammatical patterns that carry the most meaning for a given task, such as sentiment analysis or topic classification. In modern deep learning systems, including large language models, much of this feature extraction happens automatically as part of the model's internal layers, learning which patterns in the input matter most for the task, rather than requiring engineers to manually design and select features beforehand the way earlier machine learning approaches did.
