In AI, a model is a computational system trained on data to recognize patterns and use them to perform a specific task, such as classifying images, predicting a numeric value, or generating text. It's essentially a mathematical representation of some real-world process, built and refined by adjusting internal parameters until its outputs reasonably match what's actually observed in the training data.
The analogy of a model airplane is a useful one: just as a model airplane is a smaller, simplified version of the real thing, an AI model is a simplified mathematical version of whatever process it's trained to approximate, whether that's the relationship between weather patterns and tomorrow's forecast, the visual features that distinguish a cat from a dog in a photo, or, in the case of a language model, the statistical patterns that make text read as coherent language.
