A knowledge base is a structured, organized repository of information designed for easy storage, retrieval, and reuse, whether by human users searching for answers or by an AI system that needs supplementary factual context. It differs from a raw, unstructured collection of documents in that information is typically organized, categorized, and cross-referenced in a way that makes specific facts easy to locate and pull out.
In AI applications, a knowledge base is commonly paired with a language model in a retrieval-augmented generation setup: rather than relying solely on what it memorized during training, the model retrieves relevant facts from the knowledge base at the moment of answering, which helps ground its response in accurate, up-to-date, and verifiable information rather than a potentially outdated or imprecise memory of its training data.
