Plugins and tools extend what a large language model can do beyond generating text on its own, giving it the ability to call external functions, APIs, or services and incorporate the results into its response. Instead of relying purely on what it learned during training, a model equipped with tools can perform actions like searching the web, running code, querying a database, or booking a reservation.
This significantly reduces one of the core limitations of language models on their own: without access to live data, a model can only draw on its training data, which has a fixed cutoff date and no awareness of anything that happened afterward. A model that can call a web search tool, for instance, can pull in current information rather than guessing, which also meaningfully reduces the risk of hallucination on questions the model wasn't trained to answer directly.
