A video sitemap is a specialized XML sitemap, or an extension to a page sitemap, that lists pages containing video content along with metadata Google can't necessarily extract from the video file itself: title, description, duration, thumbnail, and category.
It matters especially for video embedded through JavaScript players or hosted on third-party platforms, cases where a crawler might not otherwise easily discover or fully understand the video without that explicit metadata spelled out. Beyond helping with basic discovery, a properly maintained video sitemap improves the odds a video shows up in Google's dedicated video search results and in video-rich snippets within normal search results, both of which can meaningfully boost visibility for video-heavy content beyond what the surrounding page's text alone would earn. For any site investing seriously in video content, whether hosted directly or embedded from YouTube or another platform, a video sitemap is a relatively small technical addition that helps make sure that investment actually gets found.
