An AI trainer is a person who helps refine and improve an AI model's behavior by providing structured feedback, ranking the quality of different candidate responses, and creating sample dialogues or scenarios the model can learn from. This work is a critical human input into the process of fine-tuning a model beyond its initial, broad pretraining.
AI trainers play a central role specifically in techniques like reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF), where human judgments about which of several model outputs is better, more helpful, or safer are used to shape the model's future behavior. This human-in-the-loop step is largely what separates a raw, newly pretrained model from a polished, genuinely useful assistant like ChatGPT, since the underlying pretraining alone doesn't teach a model what people actually consider a good, appropriate response.
