ChatGPT is a conversational AI chatbot developed by OpenAI, built on its GPT family of large language models and launched publicly in November 2022. Unlike the earlier, stateless GPT models that treated each request independently, ChatGPT maintains conversational context across a session, letting it answer follow-up questions, remember what was said earlier in the chat, and hold something closer to an actual back-and-forth conversation.
It's trained on a broad mixture of text and further refined using reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF), where human reviewers rank candidate responses to steer the model toward answers that are more helpful, accurate, and safe. ChatGPT can draft and edit text, explain concepts, write and debug code, and handle a wide range of everyday and professional tasks, and its rapid adoption after launch played a large role in bringing large language models into mainstream, everyday use.
