Use of AI in Banking and Finance

Use of AI in Banking and Finance

In today's rapidly digitalizing world, the banking and finance sectors are going through a major transformation. Artificial intelligence (AI) is pushing past the boundaries of traditional financial services and reshaping business processes, and it's having a major impact on banking, just as it is everywhere else. In this article, we'll look at how AI applications in banking and finance are growing, and the benefits AI brings to the sector.

Benefits of Using AI in the Finance Industry

One of the main reasons AI has spread so widely across banking and finance, as it has in every other sector, is that it automates routine tasks. Beyond automating routine work and handling it faster, AI brings plenty of other advantages too, cutting down human error and speeding up controls among them. Here's a quick rundown of the main benefits of using AI in banking and finance:

Automatization of Routine Works

Plenty of routine banking processes, document processing, payment transactions, and credit card transactions among them, can be automated with AI. Regular payments like bill payments, for example, are easy to track with AI in place.

Risk Management & Assessment

AI makes it easier to assess financial risks like credit risk and market risk, and to generate risk reports. For example, by analyzing a loan applicant's income and financial status, AI can support a much faster decision on whether to approve or reject the loan.

Improving Customer Experience

AI-based chatbots and virtual assistants can understand what customers need, offer the right solutions, and improve the overall experience. Chatbots can also answer questions far faster than a human agent, letting a bank reach more users in less time.

Fraud Detection

Trained on abnormal transaction patterns, AI can flag suspicious financial activity very quickly and help prevent problems like fraud before they escalate.

Data Analysis and Prediction

By analyzing large volumes of data, AI can predict market trends and future financial movements, which speeds up decision-making for anyone looking to invest.

Cost Savings

Bringing AI into the financial sector automates certain tasks, which can reduce the need for additional labor and cut costs.

Minimizing Human Error

In banking and finance, a human error can carry huge consequences. Using AI helps minimize that error factor and reduces both personal and corporate risk.

Fast Decision Making

This overlaps with the points above, but it's worth calling out on its own: one of AI's biggest benefits in banking and finance is that it speeds up decision-making by grounding it in data.

Taken together, these points make it clear that keeping up with AI developments matters a great deal for banks and financial institutions.

The Place of AI in the Turkish Banking System

As in the rest of the world, AI use in Turkey's banking sector keeps growing. By adopting and developing this technology, Turkish banks continue pursuing more data-driven, effective service in a competitive industry. AI is expected to become even more deeply integrated into banking going forward, opening up new opportunities for innovation. Plenty of Turkish banks are also supporting and closely tracking developments in this space by running AI-focused bootcamps.

Virtual assistants are among the clearest examples of AI in Turkey's banking sector. Ugi, Garanti Bank's virtual assistant, is one such AI-based model, offering support similar to a customer representative across areas like account transactions and foreign currency trading. Similarly, İşbank's AI-based assistant, Maxi, has its features summarized on the İşbank website. Today, plenty of banks have AI-supported virtual assistants, and they keep getting better.

One of the clearest examples of AI use in Turkish banking is fraud detection. Plenty of well-known banks now rely on AI for exactly this.

The main goal of AI-assisted fraud detection is catching people who try to obtain money or assets through illegal means. Fast action matters here, since new fraud methods emerge constantly and need to be kept up with, and AI-based fraud detection tools help banks solve this problem faster.

A 2020 study shows that banking and finance is among the sectors where fraud shows up most often, which points to real customer demand in this area, and a need for banks to stay more careful.

Another AI technology widely used by banks in Turkey is loan evaluation. Reviewing the thousands of loans processed every day by hand simply isn't realistic, which is why plenty of banks now lean on AI to evaluate loan requests, weighing factors like payment history, income, risk score, and payment patterns with AI's help.

In short, AI use in the banking sector keeps growing and developing by the day.

An Example of Using AI in the Banking Sector:

I'll close this article with an example I put together using ChatGPT. I asked it to create 5 different customer profiles and classify them by criteria like income, risk score, and payment pattern, then used that classification to decide whether I'd approve a loan for each customer.

Here's roughly what I asked. I added a few examples to help it understand the task better, though, as you'll see, the example I gave was fairly superficial next to how an actual banking system works. :)

Here's the answer I got back: a printout of which customers should get credit, which should get limited credit, and which shouldn't get credit at all.

In the real banking world, decisions like this obviously rest on a much larger set of criteria, and much more complex processes. My goal here was simply to show how the system works at a basic level.

In conclusion, using AI in banking and finance is a real driver of efficiency across the industry, one that reduces risk and improves the customer experience. AI applications in data analytics, customer service, fraud detection, and beyond are helping financial service providers stay more competitive. Going forward, AI's role in this sector will only grow, and it will keep benefiting both companies and customers by making financial transactions smarter.
