Protocol

When someone opens a web page, the browser and server communicate according to a set of rules and standards called a protocol. The protocol appears before the rest of the URL, though users do not always need to type it. In “https://zeo.org/”, for example, “https” identifies the protocol. Common protocols include HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol), HTTPS (Secure Hypertext Transfer Protocol), and FTP (File Transfer Protocol).
