Server Status Codes

A server status code is the three-digit number a server sends back with every response, telling the browser (and any crawler) what actually happened with the request, before the browser even gets to displaying anything. The first digit sorts codes into broad families: 2xx means success, 3xx means redirection, 4xx means a client-side problem like a missing page, and 5xx means the server itself failed.

For SEO, these codes are the ground truth beneath everything a page appears to do. A page can look completely fine in a browser and still be quietly returning the wrong code underneath, a soft 404 serving 200, an accidental 500 buried in server logs nobody checks, which is exactly why crawl tools, log file analysis, and Search Console's coverage reports all exist to surface status codes directly rather than trusting how a page merely looks. Recognizing the specific code a page returns, and understanding what that specific number is actually telling both visitors and search engines, is one of the more foundational technical SEO skills, since so many other diagnoses (indexing issues, crawl budget waste, broken migrations) trace back to a status code somewhere behaving unexpectedly.
