What is 10x Content?

Rand Fishkin coined the term in a Whiteboard Friday video: content measurably ten times better than whatever currently ranks for a given query, not just longer or better formatted. The bar is comparative. You look at what's already on page one, then build something that beats it on the dimensions that actually matter to the reader, depth of research, original data, clearer explanations, better design, or a genuinely useful tool where competitors only offer text.

Most content briefs stop at "cover the topic." A 10x brief starts with a competitive audit: what do the top five results get right, what do they miss, and where do readers still leave with unanswered questions? Fishkin ties the concept to link earning. Content this much better than the alternatives is the kind other sites reference and link to without being asked, which is why 10x content works as an editorial standard rather than a formatting checklist. It should be high quality, reliable, informative, easy to use, and unique enough that copying or lightly rewriting it elsewhere would visibly downgrade it.
